Coronavirus test production line for Abacus Diagnostica in the diagnostics industry
Founded in 2004, Abacus Diagnostica Oy was a spin-off biotechnology company from the University of Turku, specializing in DNA and RNA tests for infectious diseases.
The company developed and manufactured automated testing systems, consisting of test chips, devices, and software for interpreting results. These systems were primarily used for the rapid diagnosis of infectious diseases, such as coronavirus, influenza, and intestinal bacteria.
Abacus Diagnostica’s main customers were hospital laboratories, but its testing systems could be utilized in any healthcare facility, as they did not require specialized expertise to operate.
The company’s products were sold through distributors in over 25 countries, primarily in Europe and Asia.
The company has ceased operations under the name Abacus Diagnostica and has since merged with another company.
Collaboration between Kaptas and Abacus Diagnostica
At the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, Abacus Diagnostica developed a rapid, user-friendly, and cost-effective COVID-19 test. As the demand for testing quickly increased, Abacus needed additional production capacity to meet the growing demand.
Kaptas implemented an automated production line for Abacus, significantly improving production efficiency and replacing previously slow manual work with automation.
Abacus chose Kaptas as an automation partner due to its local expertise and customer-centric approach, which added value to the company’s growth.
– A well-known, reliable local partner with whom we had already become familiar through various networks. What’s great is that experienced and skilled people from Turku were able to bring customer-oriented thinking to the automation solution – added value that we didn’t initially even think to ask for. Plus, the quick delivery time was another advantage, says Erno Sundberg, CEO of Abacus.
